Explore how hormones during menstruation can influence libido, intimacy, and emotional balance.

Women's experiences during their period are incredibly varied. Pain, cramps, fatigue, nausea, headaches, and mood swings are familiar challenges for many. However, surprisingly, different feelings can also emerge during this time: a stronger desire for affection, emotional closeness, cravings for sweets… and yes, increased libido in some women can also be part of this mix.

When Does Libido Peak in the Cycle?

In the approximately 28-day menstrual cycle, hormones are constantly changing. From the first day of menstruation, estrogen levels gradually rise and peak during ovulation. Scientific research shows that this is generally the period when libido is highest.

For instance, a study at the University of Virginia found that women aged 23–45 reported the highest sexual desire and orgasm intensity during ovulation compared to other phases. Similarly, a small study in Canada observed that women in their ovulation period exhibited more attractive and sensual behaviors.

What Happens During Menstruation?

In the premenstrual phase (PMS), declining estrogen and progesterone levels can cause irritability, anxiety, bloating, and mood changes. Once menstruation begins, hormone levels gradually start to stabilize. This can make women feel calmer, more balanced, and emotionally open compared to the PMS phase.

Additionally, body sensitivity increases during menstruation. Increased blood flow in the vaginal area makes tissues more sensitive, which can lead to more intense sexual experiences or orgasms for some women. Menstrual cramps may also increase the need for oxytocin (the “love hormone”), which naturally rises during sex and may help explain libido changes during this period.

Is It the Same for Everyone?

Not at all. Many women prefer to avoid sexual activity due to discomfort or bleeding. However, for others, the hormonal shifts and increased sensitivity during menstruation can trigger sexual desire.

Libido changes during menstruation are not uniform for all women. Scientific evidence and biological mechanisms indicate that sexual desire can indeed fluctuate during this time. So if you find yourself seeking more intimacy during your period, know that it is natural and biologically explainable.
